Freedom Rangers are a slower growing bird with a more flavorful taste. We chose this breed over the more widely used Cornish Cross (what is sold at grocery stores) because they are slower growing, forage and roam better, and their superior taste. We buy day old chicks and keep them in the brooder only as long as needed. Once out of the brooder, they are put on the pasture in a moveable shelter to keep them out of the sun when needed and to have a safe place to roost at night. The shelter is moved twice a day within a moveable 1700 square foot electric netting fence to ensure they have fresh grass and the pastures don’t get over fertilized. Our Great Pyrenees watches out for the flock at night, as well.
We buy our wheat and non-GMO corn from farmers within 50 miles and non-GMO heat extruded soybean meal from a mill in Southern Missouri. Our custom feed is ground and mixed on farm to our specification instead of buying prepackaged feeds. We don’t medicate our birds. Instead, we use natural methods such as fermenting their feed to maintain gut health and control potential disease.
